College Career and Draft Success

After dominating junior hockey, Newhook committed to Boston College in the NCAA, where his freshman year was spectacular. He recorded 42 points in 34 games, leading all freshmen in goals and earning both the Tim Taylor Award and Hockey East Rookie of the Year honors.

Despite injuries during his sophomore season, he maintained an impressive pace and continued to showcase his playmaking and scoring abilities. In 2019, his consistent performance led the Colorado Avalanche to draft him 16th overall in the first round of the NHL Draft.

Professional Career

Colorado Avalanche (2021–2023)

Newhook signed a three-year entry-level deal with the Avalanche in 2021. He made his NHL debut shortly after and scored his first NHL goal during the Stanley Cup Playoffs that same year. By 2022, his contributions helped the Avalanche secure the Stanley Cup title, making him the third Newfoundlander ever to win it — following Daniel Cleary and Michael Ryder.

Although expectations rose after Nazem Kadri’s departure, Newhook’s second season with the Avalanche was mixed. He registered 30+ points but struggled to secure a consistent top-six role. Despite the challenges, his determination and offensive flashes kept him a valued young forward in the league.

Montreal Canadiens (2023–Present)

In June 2023, Newhook was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in a deal that reflected both his potential and the Canadiens’ rebuilding focus. The team signed him to a four-year, $11.6 million contract soon after.

He made a statement in his Canadiens debut, scoring two goals in the season opener. While injuries limited his 2023–24 campaign, he returned stronger in 2024, marking his 200th NHL game and 100th career point.

With his speed, intelligence, and growing confidence, Newhook is now seen as one of Montreal’s key young leaders heading into the 2025 season.

International Career

Newhook represented Team Canada at multiple international tournaments, including the World Junior Championships, where he helped secure a silver medal in 2021. He also shone at the World Junior A Challenge and U18 World Championships, consistently ranking among Canada’s top scorers.

Net Worth and Earnings

As of 2025, Alex Newhook’s net worth is estimated at $13.3 million USD. His income includes:

  • NHL salary and bonuses ($11.2M career earnings so far)
  • Endorsements and sponsorships from sports and equipment brands
  • Future guaranteed income from his four-year, $11.6M Canadiens contract

This financial success reflects his growth both as an athlete and a marketable face of Canadian hockey’s new generation.

Personal Life

Newhook was born to Paula and Shawn Newhook, and his family has remained a strong support system throughout his journey. His sister, Abby Newhook, is also a talented hockey player at Boston College, following in her brother’s footsteps.

Outside of hockey, Alex is known for his humility and love for music — he even played the trombone in high school, winning a national competition. His grounded personality and dedication continue to endear him to fans across Canada.

Legacy and Future Outlook

At just 24, Alex Newhook is still climbing toward his peak potential. His combination of skating, vision, and leadership makes him a crucial asset for the Montreal Canadiens as they aim to return to playoff contention.

With continued development and consistency, Newhook could easily emerge as one of the NHL’s most complete two-way forwards in the coming years — and a lasting representative of Newfoundland’s growing hockey legacy.

Final Thoughts

Alex Newhook’s story is one of dedication, resilience, and steady growth. From a determined kid in St. John’s to a Stanley Cup champion and rising NHL star, his journey captures what it truly means to chase a dream — and make it count.
