Early Life and Family Background

Born in Esplugues de Llobregat, near Barcelona, Yamal is the son of Sheila Ebana, a waitress from Equatorial Guinea, and Mounir Nasraoui, a painter from Morocco. His parents separated when he was three; however, both remained actively involved in his upbringing. Yamal spent his early years moving between Granollers, where his mother lived, and Mataró, his father’s residence, growing up in the working-class neighborhood of Rocafonda. He celebrates goals with a gesture referencing his neighborhood’s postcode, 08304, which has become a symbol of local pride.

At age four, he began playing football with La Torreta, a local club. By six, Barcelona scouted him and invited him to training sessions at the famed La Masia academy, where he officially joined in 2014. Throughout his youth, his idols included Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi, and Neymar, who shaped his attacking style.

Club Career

Youth Career

Yamal quickly progressed through Barcelona’s youth ranks, impressing coaches with his speed, technical skill, and football intelligence. By the 2022–23 season, he was training with the first team under Xavi. His talent stood out despite being younger than most of his teammates, signaling the start of a meteoric rise.

First Team Breakthrough (2023–24)

On 29 April 2023, Yamal made his first-team debut against Real Betis, becoming one of Barcelona’s youngest-ever players. He subsequently won his first La Liga title, although international duty prevented him from celebrating with the team. His first start came in August 2023 against Cádiz, and two weeks later he earned Man of the Match honors in a 4–3 win over Villarreal. Later that season, he made his Champions League debut and scored his first goal for the senior team against Granada.

During the season, Yamal broke multiple records, becoming the youngest scorer in La Liga, Supercopa de España, and Copa del Rey history, and he also recorded over ten goal contributions before turning 17.

Domestic Treble (2024–25)

In the 2024–25 season, Yamal played a pivotal role in Barcelona winning the La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de España. He scored in El Clásico, setting a record as the youngest player to do so. Furthermore, his 100th appearance came during the Champions League semi-final against Inter Milan, where he scored and impressed even the opposing manager. His outstanding performances earned him the 2025 Kopa Trophy and second place in the 2025 Ballon d’Or.

Inheriting Number 10 (2025–26)

Yamal signed a long-term contract with Barcelona in May 2025, keeping him at the club until 2031. He also inherited the iconic number 10 jersey, previously worn by Ansu Fati. In his first match wearing the shirt, he scored, signaling the start of a new era for both himself and the club.

International Career

Youth Teams

Yamal captained Catalonia’s under-12, under-14, and under-16 squads before representing Spain at U15, U16, U17, and U19 levels. His consistent performances quickly established him as a key player for Spain’s youth sides.

Spain Senior Team

At just 16 years and 57 days, Yamal became Spain’s youngest player and goalscorer in history when he scored against Georgia. At Euro 2024, he scored in the semi-final against France and assisted in the final against England, earning the Young Player of the Tournament award. Additionally, he scored twice in the 2025 UEFA Nations League Finals, proving his value on the international stage.

Style of Play

Yamal is a left-footed winger with exceptional dribbling, pace, and vision. He can also play as an attacking midfielder or on the right flank. His trademark outside-foot crosses (trivela) and long-range curling shots make him a versatile attacker. Media comparisons to Messi and Neymar highlight his technical and creative flair.
