Saquon Barkley was born in The Bronx, New York, to Alibay Barkley, a boxer, and Tonya Johnson. He has three brothers and two sisters, and his family has strong athletic roots. For instance, his brother Alibay Jr. was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in baseball, and his great-uncle is former WBC middleweight champion Iran Barkley.

In 2001, Barkley’s family moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, seeking a safer, more suburban environment. They later relocated to Allentown and then Coplay, Pennsylvania.
